However, it's still way overpriced compared to other server manufacturers providing the same thing. Dell's pricing on their website is cheaper and you can probably get about 1/4 off of that by going through a rep. I'd be curious to know if Apple offers the same kind of sales techniques to get a better deal, or if what you see is what you get?

Exactly what processor do you get in a cheaper Dell? There is a huge difference in price between a single 50xx processor (one old P4-style space heater Xeon), a single 51xx processor (a new Core 2 Duo Xeon chip), and two 51xx processors = four cores, which is what the Mac Pros and XServes have.

Wow, notice at 45 seconds, the iPad glass has been shattered and the ipad is severely bent, but it's still working!

    Yea, I saw that too.

    How are things food wise?

Within the Moscone Center, pretty terrible -- expensive and not good. A much better bet is to walk over to the Metreon Center, which is very close by. The food court has some good selections. I'm a big fan of the Long Life Noodle Company.

    Yup, that's a legit address

Check out http://events.apple.com.edgesuite.net/aug_2006/event/index.html which is a link to the WWDC keynote.

A few digg comments have stated that edgesuite is owned by akamai who scales traffic for apple.

I also believe the optical drive is pretty much dead...I haven't used one for about 2 or 3 years, all the software/music/etc. i buy is downloaded directly to de hard drive, and stored/backed up in other hdd, usb, sd, etc.

Apple already took the first step with the Macbook Air and provided solutions for the lack of the optical drive, it is obvious to think that in the very near future computers will be opticaldriveless to make room for other stuff in their guts and that can only be good

If you need to hear my opinion on the Jewish/ Israeli Lobby; Yes, I completely agree that it is a powerful force. However, that's not focus of the story.

Do you think that the US media are hypersensitive when it comes to criticising the pro-Israeli lobby?

There can also be no question that one who reports the news needs to remain relatively objective. I could give a damn what she says in private but when one starts expressing their opinion in a profession such a journalism, you lose all credibility to report a story without undue bias.

Well, she did express it more or less in a private capacity.

Perhaps the essence of her admittedly clumsy criticism of Jewish political influence was an attempt at a level of objectivity that is lacking in the media. Whenever a person dares criticise the pro-Israel lobby, that person is pummeled by a crowd of jerking knees and cries of anti-Semitism. I'm not excusing Thomas at all, I think she went too far in her language, but I think she has a point.

I have no problem with her expressing her opinion/ point of view but with her (former) standing, she could probably wrangle a ton of op-ed space/ television interviews to voice her concerns in a tactful manner.

...unless the media are not interested in talking about that side of the story. Come to think about it, we don't hear much about it in the media, do we?....

    Hello kind folks of MacRumors.com-

I am wishing for help and advice deciding what type of hardware to purchase for a 30TB server. It must meet the following requirements:

30TB RAID (Redundancy important for backup purposes)
Remote Accessibility in that I would like to be able to pull files from it anywhere that I have an internet connection.
Macintosh friendly it does not need to run OS X Server, it just needs to connect without hassle to Macs.

This will be used for at my office for archiving video. We may want to use Final Cut Server to sort the files in the future. I have been tasked with building this setup and am hoping for suggestions from one of the brightest communities on the web. :D

Your time in responding is much appreciated.

    :apple:

If you insist on doing this in a single box, consider running Linux. There are quite a number of good vendors for reliable, high-density Linux boxes and storage systems.

You can run the netatalk package on the Linux server, which would allow network connections use the AFP (Apple) protocol. You can even use the Linux server as a Time Machine server, with the right settings. Of course, you can also run Samba to support Windows users if needed. I wouldn't use Samba or NFS for Mac users when AFP is a perfect match and is available and pretty well-supported on Linux.

However, given the amount of storage you need, it probably would make sense - as others have at least hinted - to get a dedicated SAN box for the storage, and a separate box for remote access. This might be, for example, a Cisco VPN product, or a Linux box.

Not sure if your 10 users are just the external users, or both internal and external? If it's 10 users total, a single Linux box might be reasonable for the whole thing.

This is a great move by ATT and will hopefully be replicated by other carriers for the smartphones they sell. All carriers are going to have issues, and those issues are often not reported. I mean seriously, who is going to complain about being able to open and app and mark a problem instead of going through a 20-minute customer service call? Regardless of how you feel about their service, this app can only be a good thing.

    Nice one.

Of course, we already knew, but it's good to see confirmation and know that there will be some indie content on there. My bet: October, and definitely alongside a new video iPod.

EDIT: As opposed to a new iPod nano.

Can anyone tell me what kind of RAM I have to buy for a late 2008 MBP? On Crucial it won't tell me because their website thinks that this machine only supports 4 GB... Can I just get the 8GB RAM kit for the mid-2009 MBPs?

Can anyone answer this please? I'm curious as well.

From my experience with CF it is a very strong and light-weight material but I doubt it would be a good idea to replace something like the glass backside of the iphone with carbon fiber as it is prone to damage when pressure is applied to a very limited area (think of iphone + keys in your pocket)

For example cf-bikes are great until you have anything but a minor crash...the even the smallest crack can be devestating to the structural integrity...

Hey how much will OS X Leopard cost?

I just bought my iMac C2D "17 two weeks ago, and I just didn't want to wait until Spring '07 to buy it with Leopard installed on it.

Does Apple offer an upgrade and full versions of the OS X.5?

It would be nice if they offered some type of discount for people who bought their Macs after a certain time frame (Like October '06).
Likely exactly what they're charging for Tiger now (US$129), and, no, there is no upgrade program - unless you buy a Mac without it once its released (old stock) and in some rare cases (the PowerMac G5s shipped with Jaguar but were allowed to upgrade to Panther for either free or a nominal charge).

They don't work for Apple they work for Foxconn. Please get your facts straight before you chastise someone. The article states Foxconn investigated and called the cops.

    Wow, someone who can read.

Looking at this thread i was beginning to think it was impossible.

So are these guys getting a fair trial? Are they exempt from cruel and unusual punishment? Oh, that's right, that little lack of human rights thing...

I really think Apple should step up and make sure these guys aren't treated unfairly or overly harshly, even *if* they leaked the design. Frankly, that would be the *only* course of action for a civilized company like Apple to do.

Because normally a western company dictating a foreign countries legal system is the *only* course of action.

If there are "top secret" features, I would guess they would have to be apps if it's going to be released at MWSF? There couldn't be significant changes to the operating system without developer testing before then. Unless they are going to introduce the "top secret" features after Vista has shipped (someone was saying that's next month?) But even that seems like a really quick testing phase for developers.

Things like TimeMachine, Spaces, Expose would have all be considered a part of the operating system but in Leopard they appear as individual apps.

I agree with all the "you're a minor and you're in school to learn" etc. but if you take that attitude there are no "rebels" so to say.

The IT person has no right to take the computer away. I went to a high school that offered laptops at a discount price. If you did buy it through the school, in the contract you signed, there is a clause that says that the administration can take those computers away at any time of they "think" you're doing something illegal on it, which IMO is ********.

As for bringing you're own computer, no one at the school has any right to take the computer away. Sure he's a minor, learning at school, but everyone has rights. If it was his own computer, no one at the school has any right to take it away I think.
